The Eden Alternative

Empowering Elders to Live Enriching Lives

Windsor Healthcare Communities have always looked for innovative ways to create environments full of spirited life and nurturing. Over the past several years, we have adopted the Eden Alternative platform and been named to the National Eden Alternative Registry in several of our facilities, with several more currently working towards their certification. Aside from Windsor Healthcare Communities, New Jersey has only one other Eden Alternative facility.

About The Eden Alternative

The Eden Alternative was created by Dr. William Thomas, a Harvard educated physician and board certified geriatrician, to promote vibrant communities that emphasize vitality, choice, and autonomy. A proven system that has been adopted in progressive healthcare communities around the world, the Eden platform touches everything we do at a Windsor Community - from the types of activities offered, to the foods we prepare, to the training for our nurses. Studies show that implementation of The Eden Alternative is a powerful tool for improving quality of life and quality of care for those living in nursing homes. Also, in homes that have adopted Eden as an organizational-wide philosophy, there is often improved staff satisfaction and retention and significant decreases in the overuse of medications and restraints. Most importantly, Elders, supported by their caregivers, can once again direct their own daily lives.

Under Eden, Elders who stay in our communities enjoy expressing their creativity and interacting with nature. At an Eden home, you will often find pets and gardens, as caring for nature and other beings promotes harmony and wellness for the entire community. Laughter, children, and above all, a deep respect for the choices of our Elders are the hallmarks of an Eden Alternative program. Communities seeking Eden Alternative Registration undergo an intensive certification process that reviews every aspect of a community and ensure that it meets rigorous Eden Alternative guidelines.
